When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

If you're expecting a little one, you might already be thinking about those first precious days and how quickly they’ll pass. Newborn photography is a beautiful way to preserve all the tiny details you’ll never want to forget, from those little fingers and toes to the sleepy stretches and sweet newborn snuggles.

One of the most common questions I get is, “When should I book my newborn photography session?”

My recommendation? Book your newborn session during pregnancy, using your due date to reserve your spot, with the goal of photographing your baby around 10–14 days after birth. Here's why!

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

I recommend reaching out to book your newborn photography session during your second or third trimester. This allows us to get everything planned before your little one arrives, so you have one less thing to think about during those first busy days of parenthood.

Rather than choosing a specific session date months in advance, I reserve space on my calendar based on your baby's due date. Since babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, this approach gives us the flexibility to schedule your session once your little one makes their grand entrance.

Once your baby arrives, we'll connect to confirm their birth date and arrange your actual session date.

It's one of the easiest ways to plan ahead while leaving room for the beautiful unpredictability of welcoming a new baby!

Why I Love Photographing Newborns Around 10–14 Days Old

My ideal time to photograph newborns is around 10–14 days after birth. During this stage, babies are still wonderfully tiny, and we can capture those sweet newborn details that change so quickly in the first few weeks.

Here are a few reasons I love this window:

Those tiny newborn details. From delicate eyelashes to little curled-up toes and impossibly small fingers, so many of the details parents want to remember are changing every day.

Sleepy snuggles and sweet stretches. Many babies still enjoy plenty of cuddles and restful moments at this age, creating opportunities for beautiful, natural photographs.

A chance to settle in at home. The first days after birth can be a whirlwind. Aiming for this window gives many families a little time to settle into their new routine before their session.

Every baby is different, of course! Some are sleepier than others, and every family adjusts to life with a newborn in their own way. My approach is always to work with your baby rather than expect your baby to fit a particular schedule.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Don't worry! Babies have their own plans, and your session is designed with that in mind.

When you book based on your due date, we can adjust the timing once your baby arrives. If your little one decides to come early or takes their time making an appearance, we'll work together to find a suitable session date.

My goal is to make the experience as relaxed and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on enjoying those first days with your new addition.

What If My Baby Is Older Than Two Weeks?

Please don't worry if your baby is already a little older than 14 days when we meet. Beautiful newborn photographs can still be captured beyond this window!

Your baby doesn't suddenly stop being a newborn at two weeks old. We may simply adapt our approach to suit their stage, personality, and needs. Whether your little one is extra sleepy or more alert and curious, there are so many lovely moments to capture.

If you've missed the ideal booking window or are only just getting around to looking for a photographer, I encourage you to reach out anyway. I'd love to chat about the possibilities!

How to Reserve Your Newborn Photography Session

If you're expecting and would love to document these fleeting first days, here's how the process works:

  1. Get in touch during pregnancy. Share your due date and any details about the session you're envisioning.
  2. Reserve your spot. We'll use your due date to plan for your baby's arrival.
  3. Let me know when baby arrives. Once your little one is here, we'll connect to confirm their birth date.
  4. Schedule your session. We'll aim for around 10–14 days after birth, depending on availability and how everyone is doing.

It's a simple process that allows us to plan ahead while keeping things flexible for your growing family.

Those First Days Are Worth Remembering

The newborn stage feels like it lasts forever when you're in the middle of sleepless nights and endless cuddles, but somehow, it passes in the blink of an eye.

Booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy means you can relax knowing there's a plan in place to document this special chapter. And by aiming for around 10–14 days after birth, we can capture your baby while they're still so wonderfully tiny.

Expecting a little one? I'd love to help you preserve these first precious memories. Reach out to inquire about a newborn photography session and reserve your spot based on your due date.

I can't wait to meet your newest little love!
